Driving in High Winds

We have had a lot of high winds recently. Hopefully we won’t experience any more but, in case we do, here are some tips for driving safely.

·         Keep both hands on the wheel, particularly if you’re being buffeted by the wind or the slipstreams of other vehicles

·         Expect stronger winds and gusts on exposed stretches of road or when passing high-sided vehicles.

·         Keep your speed down too. The faster you’re travelling the further off-course you’re likely to drift in a sudden gust before you get the vehicle back under control.

·         Keep your distance from all other vehicles, as they also be affected by gusts.

·         Take particular care around cyclists, motorcyclists and horse-riders.

Beware of Tractors

Many of us come across tractors when driving. Apart from sometimes being frustrating, they can be a hazard, so take special care.

Remember

·         Tractor drivers often have sound-proofed cabs or wear ear protectors, so they may not hear approaching cars.

·         Tractors don’t have to be fitted with brake or indicator lights unless used at night so in daylight be prepared for them to stop or turn without warning.

·         A tractor may be longer than it appears – there may be a loader on the front. Make sure you have plenty of room to get past before overtaking.

·         Keep plenty of distance behind a tractor, in case it stops suddenly – remember the 2-second rule

·         Slow down if you come across a spillage – a bale of straw hit at speed will cause considerable damage to your car.

Tractor

Do you need for an urgent fast delivery of packages or documents by motorcycle, car or van?

·         Is your business at a standstill due to the lack of a small part?

·         Are legal documents urgently required at Court

Are you driving abroad this year? Here are some top tips.

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

1. Have the right documentation

  •  Valid full (not provisional) driving licence
  • Driving licence paper counterpart, if you have a photocard licence. (NB The paper counterpart to the photocard licence was abolished from 8 June 2015 and information about penalty points is only being held on DVLA’s driver record. Anticipating that some traffic police and car rental firms overseas may not immediately be aware of this change, the AA recommends that you retain your paper counterpart if you intend driving or hiring a car abroad rather than following DVLA advice and destroying it.)
  •  An International Driving Permit if required
  •  Vehicle registration document (V5c). Take the original, not a copy.
  •  Motor insurance certificate (Check with your motor insurer to make sure you have the cover you expect when driving abroad. They may ask to be notified when you travel abroad or provide only third party cover when you do)
  •  Passport(s)
  •  Your travel insurance document
  •  A visa if needed
    2. Familiarise yourself with local rules for drivers before you go. (Websites like AA will give you the information for individual countries.)
    3. Check that you are carrying the compulsory equipment for the country(ies) you are visiting. (Again, you can get this information from the AA.)
