Are you driving abroad this year? Here are some top tips.
Wednesday, July 15th, 20151. Have the right documentation
- Valid full (not provisional) driving licence
- Driving licence paper counterpart, if you have a photocard licence. (NB The paper counterpart to the photocard licence was abolished from 8 June 2015 and information about penalty points is only being held on DVLA’s driver record. Anticipating that some traffic police and car rental firms overseas may not immediately be aware of this change, the AA recommends that you retain your paper counterpart if you intend driving or hiring a car abroad rather than following DVLA advice and destroying it.)
- An International Driving Permit if required
- Vehicle registration document (V5c). Take the original, not a copy.
- Motor insurance certificate (Check with your motor insurer to make sure you have the cover you expect when driving abroad. They may ask to be notified when you travel abroad or provide only third party cover when you do)
- Passport(s)
- Your travel insurance document
- A visa if needed
2. Familiarise yourself with local rules for drivers before you go. (Websites like AA will give you the information for individual countries.)
3. Check that you are carrying the compulsory equipment for the country(ies) you are visiting. (Again, you can get this information from the AA.)

DO YOU TAKE ANY PRESCRIBED MEDICATION? New laws might affect you.
Friday, April 17th, 2015From the beginning of March 2015, a new law was introduced to try to combat the problems of drivers being under the influence of illegal drugs. This also covers some prescribed drugs.
If a driver is found guilty of breaking this law the consequences are severe:
• £5,000 fine
• automatic 12 month driving ban
• a maximum six-month jail sentence
and
• a criminal record
However, if you are taking your medicine as directed and your driving is not impaired then you are not breaking the law, so
1. Check whether what you are taking is affected by the new legislation. This can be found in the Summary of Product Characteristics provided with your medicine.
2. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor/pharmacist or printed in the accompanying leaflet, about when and how to take your medication.
3. Keep proof of any prescribed medication with you in the event you are stopped by the police.
It is your responsibility to consider whether your driving might or might not be impaired, but if it isn’t and you are taking a drug lawfully after medical advice, the new law does include a medicinal defence.
